Premier League Build Up – Matchday 21
The Premier League continues to bring up shocks with some big results in midweek, the biggest of which came in in Sheffield United’s match against Manchester United. The Blades recorded their first win of the season on Wednesday night in one of the biggest shocks in Premier League history. Chris Wilders side looked relegated already, with just 5 points from 19 matches. Many EPL fans even questioned whether or not they could break Derby’s record 11-point season, which gave them the unwanted title of “worst premier league team ever”.
Sheffield United still have a mountain to climb, but this could be the catalyst for a change in Sheffield United’s fortunes as they scrap to stay in the premier league. Sheffield United are back in Manchester to play City on Saturday which will likely be a tougher challenge. The Blades haven’t scored a league goal against Manchester City since 1993, their manager, Chris Wilder, was in the starting line-up for that game.
Elsewhere, Burnley continued their good form with a 3-2 win against Aston Villa on Wednesday. Two of Burnley’s star players last season, Dwight McNeil and Chris Wood both scored for Burnley against high flying Villa. Sean Dyche will be pleased that his attacking players are coming into form as it’s unlikely they will make January signings as he described his transfer budget as “a bag of chips”.
On Thursday night Liverpool beat Tottenham away from home. It’s the second time within almost a month that Jürgen Klopp has got the better of José Mourinho. The reds front line looked back to their usual selves and Trent Alexander Arnold who has been in poor form recently was also brilliant. Alexander Arnold scored and assisted goals in the second half to sink Spurs. Joël Matip picked up an injury which forced him off at half time and it seems to be serious, but Tottenham still struggled to test Liverpool’s makeshift backline. Liverpool fans will be hoping they sign a defender with just days of the transfer window left, but this seems unlikely.
The reds face unlikely top-four challengers, West Ham, on Sunday. This match promises to be a cracker. Liverpool will need to push on from here if they are to put in a proper challenge to defend their league title.
This weekend’s fixtures are as follows (GMT):
Saturday 30th January
